Please welcome NSX for vSphere 6.1

The 6.1 version of NSX for vSphere was released yesterday (September, 11th 2014). NSX is VMware’s solution to virtualize network and security for your software-defined data center. NSX network virtualization decouples the network from hardware into a software abstraction layer which allows you to programmatically create, provision, and manage your networks. NSX offers a distributed logical architecture for L2-L7 network services including, logical switch, router, firewall, load balancer and VPN. The benefits of this solution are huge: ...

Why NTP should ALWAYS be configured and running on your ESXi hosts?

NTP is really easy to configure on vSphere, but is not always considered as important by people who are not synchronizing the time of their guests using VMware Tools. In fact, VMware even recommends to configure time synchronization within guests using w32time or NTP instead of VMware Tools periodic time synchronization. However, the VMware Tools time synchronization controls only whether time is periodically resynchronized while the virtual machine is running. Even if this synchronization is disabled, by default VMware Tools synchronizes the virtual machine’s time after a few specific events that are likely to leave the time incorrect. ...

Release the Kraken! vMotion (Huge) Enhancements in vSphere 6

My first contact with vMotion goes back to a demo in 2004. I can still remember how the presenter connected to a Windows VM in RDP, launched a movie, migrated the VM to another host and powered off the 1st ESX…and the movie was still running! :) VMware vSphere live migration, or vMotion, allows you to move an entire running virtual machine from one physical server to another, without downtime. VMware vSphere vMotion is the foundation of many of VMware functionalities (DRS, etc. ...
